Looks aren't everything- a Ted talk

“Cameron Russell: Looks aren't everything. Believe me, I'm a model” is a Ted talk where Cameron talks openly about her feelings about beauty, modeling, and her insecurities. My favorite part of this talk is where she shows photos comparing a studio shot vs what she looked like at about the same time as the shoot. There is a deeper message here about embracing who you are, racism, and doing something to the world a better place. This 9 ½ min video is well worth the time. I wish I could show it to every girl growing up and especially to everyone who wants to be a model. would love to hear your thoughts.

Sugar, Water, and Photography

One of my hobbies/interests is food and nutrition. I don't claim to be an expert but after so many years behind the camera I have noticed a relationship between diet and healthy skin. I often joke that there are only two food groups - Sweet Fat and Salty Fat. Usually people think of Fat as the problem. I think of sugar as the problem. So when a friend of mine asked about what she might be able to do about her acne. I replied “Cut out Sugar and while you're at it cut out rice, potatoes, processed foods…” (most of us know this list). Why starches also? because starches quickly become sugar in our bodies. I told her “Not forever just a few weeks to see if there are any changes.” A quick google search “Acne and Sugar” will reveal a TON of info on the relationship between the two. One more thing -Water - Drink plenty of it. I believe that our overall health shows on our skin. Eating better will go a long way in helping us look and feel better. If you know you will have a photoshoot coming up in a few weeks, it cant hurt to start focusing on eating better now.

3 Things not to pay big for as an actor

After wrapping up yesterdays shoot I sat down with my client to help answer any questions she might have.  She is new to acting and wants to get into musical theater. She had a number of questions from "do I need an agent?" to " how do I put my resume on the back of my headshot?".  After I had answered most of her questions I asked if there was anything else she wanted some advice about. She started telling me about an audition she has in three weeks. She wanted to make sure that she would be able to have prints in that time. I assured her that she could have prints in her hands in as little as a few days. Then she showed me the audition announcement on her phone. It said that everyone auditioning had to pay $75.  I explained to her that occasionally actors will help with production by donating time or in some cases money but that is very rare. Typically if an actor donates anything it is because they are working for free and they pay out in their travel expenses and time to and from rehearsals and performances.

Since paying for agents, lessons.... comes up so often by new actors seeking my advice, I have included an article from Backstage. http://www.backstage.com/advice-for-actors/acting-teachers/3-things-not-to-pay-big-for-as-an-actor/

FYI - the photo I am including is not yesterdays client  but rather just a sample of my work. If you would like to see more of my work you can visit www.shotbyasavge.com

Mark Edward Adams - Brilliant Sculptor

Mark Edward Adams is an brilliant sculptor. He studies his subjects, mostly horses so far, until he knows them inside and out. Somehow he is able to capture not just what the horse (or dog) look like but also what they are thinking. Somehow he imbues metal with spirit. By the time I get to photograph his creations they are so alive that I approach photographing them as if this were any other portrait session. I have devoted an entire gallery to his work. www.shotbyasavage.com

Dance Dancers Dancing - an all new gallery devoted to.....

I love photographing all aspects of dance. With dance I get to photograph people, interesting outfits, and unusual poses with great lines. When working with dance I am working among other talented people.  This will occasionally lead to mutual inspiration that grows. I am lucky enough to have a few different dance schools and troops as ongoing clients. If you are a dancer with an interesting idea or a dance school needing performance or student shot, I will often work outside my usual rates. I hope you enjoy this gallery. Visit the "for hire" gallery section @ www.shotbyasavage.com to see this Dance and other new galleries.

$100 Headshots My New Special

I am going back to my roots. Why I started to shoot headshots in the first place. I want to make sure no one had to pay for bad photos. With so many bad cheap photographers out there, its tempting to give them a try, but than only separates you from your cash and doesn't give you what you need. With my bare bones $100 headshot special everyone can afford great photos.  www.shotbyasavage.com
